|8| By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. |9| As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. ABIDE IN MY LOVE.
There is one imperative sentence in all of John 15:8-9; one command, one directive, one thing we are told to do – ABIDE. Sounds simple enough…except that it doesn’t sound simple at all. It sounds so difficult to me, in fact, that I felt I needed to tattoo it on my arm to be able to remember. It is in my nature to over-complicate my relationship with God. It would be easier for me if the command read “bear much fruit” instead of being written with the conditional phrase, |5| whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.
I know that God loves me because he will not let me skip the pruning process and put myself at risk of becoming unfruitful. My life is completely stained by cups of coffee with Jesus that cut me deeply and made me better. I have a coffee stain and the lyric “all that you ever need do is abide in me” in a visible spot on my arm so that when God tells me to do something hard and I am afraid to obey, I will remember that there is only one thing that I need do. Abide in Him and abide in His love.
