The Calm In Me

good fortune

How long will I be seasick?
We’ve been at this for days
The compass is unreadable
Bouncing in the waves
When you asked me to go fishing
I thought that meant you knew
Where to go to catch these men
In this great big blue
But everything seems harder now
Each task made more complex
By the ups and downs of all the waves
And water on the decks
You’ve calmed a storm before, Lord
Why won’t you calm this one for me?
Is there something more miraculous
In someone else’s sea?
You say “be still” like it’s simple
On a boat in choppy waves
No sign of land anywhere
And we’ve been at this for days
How can you be sleeping?
Can’t you see I’m in a storm
No lighthouse no harbor
Nothing to keep me warm
Wake up, God! I’m drowning!
And you don’t seem to care
I thought we’d have smooth sailing
And weather ever fair
How long will I be seasick?
We’ve been at this for days
I can’t find my way home
I’m lost in a haze
Then God sat up, not on the boat
but deep inside my gut
“The calm is in you, Worrier.
It’s there no matter what”
And as The Lighthouse spoke
I saw it on His face
A clear and vivid beam
Shining through the waves
Teach me Lord to navigate
Without fear of the sea
For the Lighthouse is in the boat
And the Calm’s inside of me
